EARTH PATROL EDUCATION

FISH FINDER

In the Fall of 2010, the Earth Patrol was extremely fortunate to host a special talk from a very busy steward of our local environment.

Dr. Lynda D. Corkum is a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Windsor and a long-standing member of the Essex County Field Naturalists’ Club.

Dr. Corkum came to our school and talked about the fascinating fish of Essex County.  We learned that there are at least 65 species of fish in the Detroit River like yellow perch, pickerel, lake sturgeon, and bass.  We also heard about some non-native invasive fish like the round gobies which are now living in our waters.

At the end of her talk, Dr. Corkum praised our good work of caring for the environment and showed us how what we do is actually connected to our local waterways and it has an impact on local wildlife and our own human health.

She also left us with a copy of her book entitled "Fishes of Essex County and Surrounding Waters".  All the proceeds of the book go to the Essex County Field Naturalists' Club.  So that that tells you a little bit about how dedicated Dr. Corkum is to helping the environment she lives in.

BIRD BANDING

In 2009, the Earth Patrol was visited by Phil Roberts, president of the Essex County Field Naturalists Club.

Phil led us through a great presentation about the Bald Eagle comeback in Essex County.  He also talked about his work banding birds as well as his work at the Windsor Airport.

We learned a lot from this local naturalist who let us know that what we are doing is important and appreciated.  We are starting to learn that we are not working in isolation.  There are lots of other people in this county working to protect and enhance our local environment.
