ONTARIO EcoSchools

GOING FOR GOLD
For the 2010-2011 school year, we applied for EcoSchool certification for the first time.  And guess what.  We were awarded SILVER status.  Well, now we want to GO FOR GOLD this year!  The Earth Patrol is leading the way with help from the entire school community.  We have done our first round of Waste and Energy Audits.  Teachers have submitted some of their outdoor/nature lesson plans.  We've done lots of education and outreach work.  Ms. Walker is diligently updating our online submission form as new items come it.  It is a frenzy of eco-activity aimed at making our school more GREEN..........and GOLD!

GECDSB EcoSchools WORKSHOP (January, 2012)

Camille Seaman opened the annual GECDSB EcoSchools workshop with some inspiring and thought provoking words and pictures. "We are connected to each other and everything around us," she told the 450 students and staff members from across the Board. Ms. Seaman is internationally renowned for her photographs and videos of the Polar regions, especially icebergs, many of which she showed her audience.
The program concluded with a presentation from Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield, who compared life on Earth, "our space ship", to life on the International Space Station, which he will command next year. "Worrying doesn't accomplish anything," Colonel Hadfield responded to a student question of whether he was worried about the Earth. "I identify things that I can do something about and I focus on that."

GECDSB EcoSchools WORKSHOP (January, 2011)
This year's guest speaker was educator, social entrepreneur and adventurer, Geoff Green - the founder of Students on Ice (www.studentsonice.com).

Since 1999, this award-winning educational program has taken over 1,800 students, teachers, scientists, artists, musicians and leaders from around the world on educational expeditions to the Arctic and the Antarctic. The goal of the pioneering project is to give the world’s youth a heightened understanding and respect for our planet’s global ecosystem, and the inspiration to protect it.

We also heard from David Phillips, "Canada's Weather Guru" and Senior Climatologist with Environment Canada

GECDSB EcoSchools WORKSHOP (January, 2010)

April 8, 2003: Karsten Heuer and Leanne Allison left the remote community of Old Crow,Yukon, to join the Porcupine Caribou Herd on their epic life journey. For 5 months the Canadians migrated on foot with the 123,000-member herd from wintering to calving grounds in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and back again — 1500km across snow and tundra. They completed their journey on Sept. 8, 2003 and headed straight to Washington, DC to tell politicians and activists what they found.
